KOTA KINABALU: A man shot dead by police in a shootout here yesterday was involved in 15 housebreaking cases and two robberies involving almost RM300,000 losses.
Identified as 30-year-old Kaidal Muksin, the Filipino man was active in crimes in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Papar districts with four other culprits since 2009.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said the man was involved in 15 housebreaking cases based on his fingerprints and close circuit television (CCTV) footages.
"The housebreaking cases involved RM265,150 losses while two robbery cases involved RM34,000 losses," he told reporters at a press conference here today.
Chandra said police were looking for another accomplice, who was still at large.
He said police had recently arrested two accomplices, and another was currently serving a jail sentence.
In the shootout at Telipok yesterday, Kaidal had fired at the police patrol team, who returned fire in self-defence.
The man died on the spot after he was hit by bullets in the chest and head.
Prior to the early morning incident, Kaidul was riding a motorcycle and was acting suspiciously. He fled the scene when police approached him and a pursuit ensued.
Meanwhile, Chandra said police would conduct Op Selamat at four accident-prone locations in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festive season.
The areas were Jalan Lintas, Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, Jalan Tuaran Lama and Jalan Tuaran Bypass.
