Two arrested for Kepong ATM armed robbery; linked to string of crimes

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have arrested two suspects involved in a recent robbery resulting in injury at the Hong Leong Bank Kepong ATM vestibule on Dec 27, 2023.

On the said date at around 8.00pm, Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Moh Zahari said a 30-year-old local man, who was on duty in the ATM area, confronted a suspect wearing a motorcycle helmet upon entry.

"However, the suspect brandished a kitchen knife towards the complainant. A struggle ensued between the complainant and the suspect, resulting in the complainant sustaining injuries to the head from being struck with the blunt end of the knife," he said during a press conference at the district's headquarters here today.

Subsequently, Sukarno said the suspect directed the victim to stay quiet and proceeded to rob three other individuals present in the vestibule area before fleeing on a motorcycle with an accomplice waiting outside the bank premises.

He also said the injured victim received medical treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, where it was confirmed that the injuries sustained were minor.

"Acting on valuable information, Sentul police conducted successful operations on Jan 4 and Jan 6, 2024, leading to the arrest of two local men, both aged 38, in separate locations in Perak and Pahang," he added.

The police seized critical evidence during the arrests, including four mobile phones of various brands, two sets of clothing worn during the incident, two motorcycle helmets, a motorcycle, and the kitchen knife.

He said that both arrested suspects were found to have various past criminal records and the capture of these individuals marked the resolution of a total of six cases in Kuala Lumpur and 28 cases in Perak.

"The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for committing armed robbery causing injury," he said.

The Kuala Lumpur police issued a stern warning to the public; to comply with the law and emphasising collective efforts to safeguard the well-being and harmony of the community.

Stringent actions will be taken against individuals who violate the law.
