Former Rapid Penang COO fined RM1.05m for corruption [NSTTV]

KUANTAN: A former Rapid Penang chief operating officer (COO) was slapped with a RM1.05million fine by the Sessions Court here today after he pleaded guilty to three counts of corruption amounting to RM210,000 between 2014 and 2016.

Sessions Court judge, Dazuki Ali also ordered Mohd Shukri Abdul Rahman, who vacated his position as Rapid Penang COO last November, to serve two weeks' in prison.

Mohd Shukri, 55, was charged with accepting cash on three occasions from Jayonik MSC Sdn Bhd as an inducement to issue an appointment letter to the company for a bus simulator system project worth RM8.4mil.

On the first count, he was charged with receiving RM100,000 which was deposited into a friend's Hong Leong bank account at a Hong Leong bank branch in Beserah on March 12, 2014.

On the second count, he was charged with receiving RM40,000 on June 20, 2016, whereby the cash was deposited into his wife's CIMB Bank account at the Pekan branch CIMB Bank.

Lastly, on the third count, RM70,000 was deposited into a Maybank account which belonged to one of his staff at the Petang Times Square Maybank branch in Georgetown, Penang on April 20, 2015.

He was charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries the maximum 20 years' jail and RM10,000 fine or five times the value of the bribe, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Last August, Mohd Shukri was produced at the Kuantan and Georgetown Sessions Court to 42 charges of receiving bribes amounting RM508,418 from several companies between 2013 and 2017, and he had pleaded not guilty.

Of the 42 charges, three were read again during today's proceedinga including one count of which he was previously charged at the Georgetown Sessions Court involving a RM70,000 inducement, which was later transferred to the Kuantan Sessions Court.

Dazuki said the remaining 39 counts will be taken into consideration by the court.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib and Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamri prosecuted, while the accused was represented by Datuk Shukri Mohamad.
