Mother, stepdad claim trial to abusing teenage daughter [NSTTV]

KANGAR: A woman and her husband claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to a joint charge of abusing her 14-year-old daughter early this month.

The 37-year-old woman and her 26-year-old husband pleaded not guilty to slapping the victim, hitting her with a crash helmet and chaining her neck and hands.

They allegedly committed the offence between 6pm on Feb 6 and 12.30am on Feb 7 at a house in Kampung Tengah, Kuala Perlis, here.

The charge under Section 31 (1) of the Child Act 2001 provides for a jail term of up to 10 years, or a fine up to RM50,000 or both, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari prosecuted while counsel Zuhair Ahmad Zakuan represented the couple.

Judge Johari Hassan set March 23 for mention.

The couple will be detained at the remand prison pending trial as the court did not offer bail.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the victim is currently placed under the care of the Welfare Department.
