MACC keeping a close eye on department sports clubs seeking 'donations'

KOTA BARU: Sport clubs from several governments departments in Kelantan are under close scrutiny by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

This was after staff of the clubs who are also civil servants were believed to have received valuable items on behalf of their respective club’s interest.

State MACC director Datuk Moh Samsuddin Yusof said the civil servants were believed to have received the money which they had described as `gifts’ by several persona whom they have friended.

He said the money or the gifts were for several purposes which includes for the club’s functions such as Hari Raya celebration and birthday parties.

“I would like to stress here that a public servant can only receive the gift if it is not related to his work.

“Otherwise, it is an offence under Section 165 of the Penal Code for public servant obtaining any valuable thing, without consideration, from the person concerned in any business transacted by such public servant,” he said.

He said this to reporters after witnessing the signing of corruption free pledge of the state National Unity and Integration Department today.

Moh said the modus operandi adopted by the clubs will see each civil servant referring to their respective head of department before asking for the `donation’ from certain individual.

“There are certain department’s in the state that do not have the guideline on receiving `gift’ and this resulted to many of their staff who still not aware about the offence,” he said.

Moh said the state MACC opened an investigation paper on the offence on a sport club belonged to a department here last year. “The case has been referred to the respective head of department for further action,” he said.

About 500 staff and officers from the department took part in the pledge which was held at Dewan Sri Tunjung here today.

Also present were National Unity and Integration department deputy director-general (operation) Abdul Karim Abu Seman and state deputy director Sukri Omar.
