Penang MACC detains director over RM13,000 bribe for state department contract

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today arrested a company director for allegedly giving a bribe of approximately RM13,000 to an engineer in exchange for securing a contract with a department in the state.

According to sources, the male suspect in his 50s was arrested around 3am while having his statement recorded at the MACC Penang Office here to assist in the investigation.

Earlier, the MACC had detained an engineer for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes totalling around RM13,000 from a contractor in mid-2022 and using the money to purchase a snooker table and a ping pong table placed in his office.

Meanwhile, Penang MACC director, Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah, when contacted, confirmed the arrest, saying the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

A five-day remand order starting today has been issued by Magistrate Shyahirah Abdul Salim after the MACC applied for it at the George Town magistrate's court on Friday.

The suspect is represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
