Former lecturer pleads not guilty to cheating USM

GEORGE TOWN: A former lecturer was charged at the magistrate’s court here today with two counts of cheating the management of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to get a job.

N. Thevananthan, 51, pleaded not guilty to both charges before magistrate L. Umma Devi.

He was charged with:

* cheating the management of USM by producing fake documents to get the job as a lecturer on Aug 15, 2008, which resulted in the university having to pay out a total of RM195, 081.38; and

* producing a fake doctorate certificate from the University of Maryland, United States, on the same day.

Umma Devi set bail at RM17, 500 for both charges pending mention on April 9.

Inspector Siti Hajar Jaafar prosecuted while Thevananthan was represented by counsel M. Athimulan.
