Batu Pahat woman jailed a month after pleading guilty to theft

BATU PAHAT: "I want to be freed...to go back home."

These were the words of a woman who was sentenced by the magistrate's court for theft and concealing stolen property.

Nur Munirah Azwa Muhamad Rapi, 20, pleaded guilty to the two charges under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which is for assisting in concealment of stolen property; and under 380 of the same code for theft in a dwelling.

The charges were read in front of magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin.

The first charge was for stealing a handphone belonging to a 25-year-old woman and selling it at handphone shop in Jalan Besar, Rengit at 5pm on Feb 8.

Under this charge, Nur Munirah committed an offence which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, upon conviction.

In her second charge, she stole a wallet containing money which belonged to a 34-year-old woman in Jalan Idrus, here at 8.30am on Feb 21.

This offence under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a jail sentence of up to 10 years and fine, while a subsequent offence would carry a jail term, fine and whipping, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sarip prosecuted, while Nur Munirah was unrepresented.

The prosecution urged the court to mete out a deterent sentence.

The court sentenced Nur Munirah an to a month in jail beginning from her Feb 21 arrest, for both charges.
