Police detain man alleged to have destroyed flags of a political party (NSTTV)

KUALA LUMPUR: A man was arrested by police on Thursday for allegedly removing and breaking a political party's flags at Jalan Sultan Abd Samad/ Jalan Tun Sambanthan 4 junction in Brickfields.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ruslan Khalid said the 48-year-old man was detained at a car wash centre in Brickfields about 6.30pm.

Ruslan said the man will be remanded till tomorrow to facilitate investigation under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief.

"The suspect is believed to have been under alcohol influence when he was caught removing and breaking the flags on April 8 about 11.30pm.

"Investigation revealed he was not hired by anyone. However, investigations are still on-going," he said in a statement today.

Ruslan said police were taking the incident seriously and urged Malaysians not to violate the law.

"If you suspected someone has violated local authorities’ laws, do report to the concerned department.

"Destruction of property at public areas is an offence categorised as mischief," he said.

He added police would always monitor such acts and ensure that the parties involved were investigated, arrested and charged.

It was reported that Bukit Bintang Umno youth has lodged a police report at Dang Wangi district police headquarters after a 15-second video which went viral showed a man removing, breaking and throwing flags of a political party on Tuesday.
