Man jailed three days for stealing two bags of onions in Melaka

AYER KEROH: A man was sentenced to three days jail for stealing RM11.26 worth of onions from a Mydin store in Melaka Sentral.

Rahaman Sukuler, 28, an Indian national, was also fined RM2,000 for the offence.

Magistrate Mohd Firdaus Saleh delivered the sentence after Rahaman pleaded guilty to the offence at the Magistrate’s Court here on Friday.

He faces two months’ jail if he fails to pay the fine.

According to the facts of the case, the accused, who works at the store’s customer service department, stole two bags of onions worth RM11.26 just after midnight on March 6.

He was charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum seven days jail and a fine.

Deputy public prosecutor N Sivashangari had earlier asked for a suitable punishment to be meted out as the accused had a fixed income.

The accused, however, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lighter punishment.
