Trio remanded over fake academic certs released on bail

PUTRAJAYA: Three men remanded to assist in a probe into the issuance of fake higher learning institutions’ accreditation certificates have been released on bail.

The trio, two locals and an Indian national, were previously remanded for seven days.

The two locals were released on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) bail of RM7,000 each with one surety, while the Indian national was released on RM10,000 bail with two sureties and his passport handed over to the court.

The order against the trio, aged between 30 and 34, was issued by Magistrate Low Wen Zhen.

All three were previously arrested by MACC on April 15 during a raid in the Klang Valley.

So far, six individuals including two women were arrested to assist investigation into the case.

According to a source, the syndicate produced fake academic certificates and academic transcripts for various clients.

They would take about one week to produce each certificate bearing the names of private and public universities.

It is learnt that clients were charged RM4,500 for a fake diploma certificate, RM12,500 for a bachelor degree, RM15,000 for a master’s degree, and RM20,000 for a doctorate degree.

The certificates covered a range of courses including science, arts, engineering and medicine.
