Police to summon PKR's Rafizi as part of fake news investigation

SEREMBAN: Negri Sembilan police will call PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli to assist in a probe on allegations that the Election Commission (EC) and police were behind the failure of PKR’s Rantau state seat candidate Dr Streram Sinnasamy to submit his nomination paper on Apr 28.

State police chief Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin said the case will be investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Anti-Fake News Act 2018.

“We will call Rafizi and other parties involved in the incident as soon as possible,” he said.

Noor Azam added that police will also work closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to trace the owner of a Facebook account in which a death threat to an EC staff member was made.

The threat is believed to be connected to Dr Streram’s failed nomination bid.

“We are tracing the owner with the help of the MCMC. We will update you soon,” he told reporters.

The 36-year-old EC staff member lodged a report at the Rembau police headquarters on May 2 after noticing the Facebook post, which contained his photo and a threat against him of death or bodily injury, in addition to insulting remarks.

With election day just four days away, Noor Azam is urging all parties to be more responsible and sensitive towards other to avoid tension in society.

“Be professional and act maturely. If you see something is not right, report it to the police. Don’t take matters into your own hands,” he said.

Earlier, Noor Azam joined 1,168 policemen in Seremban to cast their early votes at the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) Unit 7, at the Negri Sembilan police contingent headquarters here.
