(Update) Pekida member arrested for allegedly threatening PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a Persatuan Kebajikan Islam dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Pekida) member to facilitate investigations into a threat issued against Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Fuzi Harun said the 38-year-old man was detained at Jalan Beverly Height, Ampang at 4.40am on Saturday.

He said a police report was lodged against the man on May 31, and that the threat was allegedly issued via social media.

"The (police) report was lodged after an article about a man wanting to go to war and shoot Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went viral on social media.

"The suspect, however, claims his Facebook account was hacked by irresponsible parties," Fuzi said in a statement today.

Fuzi said the suspect will be remanded until Wednesday, and that investigations are being carried out under Section 506 of the Penal Code (criminal intimidation) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (improper use of network facilities or network service).

Meanwhile, in a statement made available to NSTP today, Selangor Pekida Yang Dipertua Mohamad Syahrir Abdul Aziz denied Fuzi's statement that the suspect is a Pekida member.
