Elderly man arrested for allegedly issuing death threat against Umno Youth chief

MELAKA: An elderly man was arrested for allegedly issuing a death threat against Umno Youth chief, Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh earlier today.

The 68-year-old man, who owns a car repair shop in Bukit Duyong, was detained after he threatened to shoot Dr Akmal.

Dr Akmal, who is also Jasin Umno division chief, was among the most vocal critics of convenience store chain KK Mart, after allegations that socks bearing the word 'Allah' were found sold at its Bandar Sunway outlet.

Melaka Tengah district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, said the police received a report from a 62-year-old retired government servant at 10.21am today.

"On March 20, around 3pm, the complainant overheard that the owner of the workshop was unhappy with Dr Akmal regarding the KK Mart issue and made threatening remarks."The complainant remained silent and did not engage with the man.

Dissatisfied with the comments made by the suspect, the complainant decided to lodge a report at the Kandang police station out of concern for Dr Akmal's safety," he said in a statement.

Following this, Patit said the police detained the suspect in the Kandang area at around 4 pm today.

"The investigating officer is obtaining further information regarding the case under investigation.

"The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, and if found guilty, the offender can be imprisoned for up to seven years, fined, or both," he said.

Patit added that the suspect was released on police bail due to health reasons.
