Driver charged in fatal drunk driving crash in Tawau [NSTTV]

TAWAU: A woman was today charged at the Tawau magistrate’s court with driving under alcohol influence which caused the death of four men at Jalan Chong Thien Vun, last Sunday.

Olivia Chong Oi Yun, 34, was charged with driving a Toyota Vios under the influence of intoxicating liquor at the parking area in front of BDC Commercial Centre, Jalan Chong Thien Vun at 1.20am on July 8.

Chong, who works as a management executive at a private company, was charged under Section 44 (1) (b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a maximum of RM20,000 fine and 10-year imprisonment.

No plea was taken.

Magistrate Ferhanshah Farene set August 15 for re-mention to obtain chemical report and autopsy reports of the four victims.

According to the charge sheet, a high amount of alcohol was traced in the accused’s body which exceeded the prescribed limit.

Those who were killed were Hiew Nyuk Wei, 30; Clawence Wong Vun Kit, 21; Dicson Lim Kien Shing, 16; and Chong Wei Chan, 21.

Another victim, Chin Guan Xiong, 21, suffered a broken leg.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Muhammad Fitri Wan Azizan did not offer bail due to “safety reasons”.

Ferhanshah granted RM4,000 bail with two sureties and ordered the accused’s driving license suspended until the case was concluded.

The court also ordered the accused’s passport to be surrendered and for the accused to report to the investigating officer once a fortnight.
