Senior citizen falls victim to robbery by stepdaughter, granddaughters

BUTTERWORTH: A senior citizen was robbed by her stepdaughter and two granddaughters in her house in Kampung Contoh, Bagan Ajam, here, at 6am, yesterday.

The 83-year-old, who was unhurt in the incident, was relieved off her gold chain and gold bracelet.

Seberang Prai utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the victim was home alone at the time of the incident.

Her 60-year-old son, who lived with her, had gone out.

“She was sleeping in her bedroom when she heard someone knocking on the door repeatedly,” he said.

“She got up to open the door, thinking that it was her daughter.

“When she went out, a woman came from behind, grabbed her, covered her face and pointed a knife at her chest before ordering her to remove the gold chain and gold bracelet that she was wearing.

“After taking the items, the suspect fled using the back door.”

Noorzainy said police found no signs of forced entry.

He added that the victim said she often left the door unlocked when she was at home.

“Checks found that the suspects were her stepdaughter and two granddaughters, aged between 17 and 42.

“They had resorted to stealing from the victim to settle their debts,” he said, adding that a goldsmith had admitted to buying the items from the trio for RM2,000.

In a follow-up operation, Noorzainy said police arrested the suspects at another house about 1.30pm the same day.

“During the arrest, police seized a cell phone, RM1,250, goldchain, gold bracelet and a goldsmith ticket. Losses are estimated at RM15,000,” he added.

“Urine tests carried out on the trio yielded negative results for drugs. They did not have criminal records.

The suspects have been remanded for a week from today to assist in investigations.
