Allegedly abused blind senior citizen sent to old folks home

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The visually-impaired senior citizen, who was allegedly abused by her relatives at their double-storey house in Taman Siakap in Seberang Jaya, has been sent to Rumah Perlindungan Warga Emas in Bedong, Kedah.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the 79-year-old was sent to the home today after she received treatment at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital.

“She was released from hospital after being given a clean bill of health.

“This case is more to neglect rather than abuse,” he said today.

Nik Ros Azhan said to date two arrests had been made to assist in police investigation into the case, involving the elderly woman’s nephew and his wife.

Police detained a 56-year-old man and his wife, aged 54, on Tuesday following a report lodged by the chairman of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), informing them of an alleged abuse case of a blind woman in Taman Siakap.

They are being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

The chairman of the NGO was alerted on the incident by concerned neighbours.

Following the report, a police team went to the house to rescue the victim and took her to Bukit Mertajam Hospital for check up.

As a result of the alleged abuse, the victim sustained swelling on the back of her head, bruises on the right hand and injuries on her lips.

The duo’s remand expires today.
