Four-day remand for two suspected cat killers

GOMBAK: The two suspects nabbed on suspicion of killing a stray pregnant cat at a launderette, here, have been remanded for four days beginning today.

Gombak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Samsor Maarof said the remand order against the two suspects was issued by the Gombak Magistrate's Court this morning to assist in investigation under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief by killing or maiming any animal.

He said the two suspects were picked up around Gombak by the district's Criminal Investigation Division.

"Both were arrested early this morning around Gombak based on intel by police as well as information from the public," he said when contacted today.

Another suspect is still at large and police continue to hunt for him, Samsor informed.

On Thursday, police unveiled images of the three men and announced that they were wanted.

The three men are accused of placing the cat in one of the dryers of the Taman Gombak Ria launderette, shutting the door and activating the machine, before walking away.

The entire grisly incident was captured by the launderette’s closed circuit television (CCTV) camera and footage of the incident, which went viral on the internet, outraged Malaysians.

The cat’s remains were discovered by a customer at 10.30am on Wednesday and led to animal welfare activists lodging a police report.
