MACC detains university's dept director for alleged abuse of power

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a department director of a public university today to assist in an investigation on alleged abuse of power involving more than RM159,000.

The 53-year-old professor was arrested at 11.35am at the Penang MACC office after having his statement recorded.

Sources said that the man was believed to have abused his position to approve allocations to a company belonging to his sibling, for the purchases of various items for the department worth more than RM159,000 between Sept 2011 and May 2012.

Sources said the case was being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

Meanwhile, Penang MACC director Datuk Wan Ramli Wan Abdullah when contacted confirmed the arrest and that the suspect would be brought to the Butterworth Court tomorrow.
