Shahidan arrives at Kangar court to face sexual molestation charges

KANGAR: Arau Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim arrived at the Kangar Courts Complex this morning to face charges of sexually molesting a 15-year-old girl last month.

The former Cabinet minister arrived in a convoy of six cars at 8.20am.

Appearing composed, Shahidan was escorted to the complex’s entrance under heavy police guard.

About 30 people, made up of the MP’s family members, friends and supporters, were present at the court as a show of solidarity.

State police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Noor Mushar Mohd had said Shahidan faced arrest if he failed to appear in court today.

"He was absent once, and if this goes on then the police will have to do our job (by arresting him) because the arrest warrant has been issued," he told the NSTP on Saturday.

An arrest warrant was issued against the former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for failing to appear at the Kangar Sessions Court on Nov 9 to face charges of sexually molesting the teenager in October.

Shahidah had claimed that he was unaware he had been summoned to appear in court.
