Police wrap up investigation into Bukit Kukus landslide

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police have concluded investigations into the Bukit Kukus landslide last month, which claimed nine lives and injured several others.

State police chief Datuk Seri A. Thaiveegan said that the investigation papers have been submitted to the State Prosecution Director’s office earlier today.

“Yes we have wrapped up our investigation. We just submitted the investigation papers to the prosecution office for further action,” he said when met during the Penang Police Deepavali celebration here today.

Nine site workers were killed and four others sustained injuries in the landslide at the Bukit Kukus paired roads project site on Oct 19.

After five days, the search and rescue (SAR) operation was officially called off, with nine bodies accounted for.

The project is currently under stop-work order by the Department of Occupational Safety and Heath (DOSH) and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

DOSH, the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and also a special committee by the Penang government are already conducting separate investigations involving the mishap.

Last week Thaiveegan said that they have recorded statements from almost 70 witnesses from various departments and agencies pertaining the probe.

The investigation by the police was focused on criminal negligence.
