'Edi Rejang' fails to turn up at police station

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who spew insults against a beer promoter at a hypermarket in Ampang did not turn up at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters to have his statement recorded.

DAP lawyer K.A. Ramu told NSTP he was asked by Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng to accompany the man known as 'Edi Rejang' to give his statement to the police, however the man did not turn up.

"When I arrived at the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters, I was told by the investigating officer that the man did not turn up to give his statement.

"I tried to call him but could not get him, in fact Lim had also tried to contact the man but could not get through since morning," he said.

At about 10am, press members were informed that DAP's lawyer would be accompanying 'Edi Rejang' at 1pm today.

Edi made headlines when a video he posted on Facebook went viral.

In the video of which his face was not visible, a man's voice could be heard asking a salesgirl if she was handing out samples of alcoholic drink to everyone in the hypermarket.

The girl replied firmly in the negative, saying she only offered samples of the drink to non-Muslims.

It deserves a mention that the salesgirl was promoting beer at the alcoholic section.

The girl then spoke in English, to which 'Edi Rejang' remarked that this is 'Bumi Melayu' and she should converse in Malay.

Unperturbed by his provocation, the girl merely smiled and asked if he was being racist to which he kept saying 'no, no, no.'

He then made a rude gesture to the girl, which was visible in the video.

The video attracted the attention of many and 'Edi Rejang' was at the receiving end of a barrage of criticism from Netizens.

He later apologised to all Malaysians including the female beer promoter.

"I admit my fault and I regret my actions towards the promoter," he had said, adding that he hoped the issue would be put to rest.

The matter is also under police investigation as a police report was lodged.
