13 lawmakers, 24 govt officials yet to declare assets, says MACC

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 13 Members of Parliament and 24 government administrative officials, including political secretaries, have yet to declare their assets.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Shamsun Bahrin Mohd Jamil, in revealing this today, said those were the latest numbers obtained by the commission.

Shamsun Bahrin said as of Sunday, a total of 115 lawmakers and 63 government administrative officials have declared their assets.

“Some of them were asking, what are the actions MACC can take against them if they don't do it... The truth is, we can’t do anything about it.

“To us, that was their promise... Hence, they should honour it (to declare their assets).

“What they need to do is make the declaration to the prime minister and then the PM will hand over a copy to us (MACC). The question whether they want to do it or not is up to them,” he said today, after the 2018 International Anti-Corruption Day walkabout.

The event was officiated by MACC chief Datuk Seri Shukri Abdull.

Elaborating further, Shamsun Bahrin said MACC would continue to wait for the officials to declare their assets.

“We don't have a law that compels them to declare their assets. However, we are ready to assist any MPs who want to do it." he said, adding that with a new regulation in place next year on asset declaration, all parties concerned should comply to it.

The law is expected to be tabled in April.
