Three locals arrested for allegedly insulting Agong on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested three locals yesterday to assist in investigations following allegations that they had posted remarks on social media deemed as insults against Sultan Muhammad V.

The remarks were said to have been made after Sultan Muhammad V resigned as Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Sunday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed the arrests of two men, aged 46 and 27, as well as a 26-year-old woman.

He said the arrests were made after police received several reports lodged with regard to their remarks posted on Facebook and Twitter.

"They are being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948," he said in a statement, here, today.

Commenting further, the IGP advised the public to use social media wisely and to refrain from posting remarks that were provocative.

"Avoid from manipulating the issue of the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong's resignation to a point that it can create a negative perception against the royal institution in this country," he said.
