Burglar's Australia getaway plan shattered, nabbed at bus station

KUALA TERENGGANU: He had it all planned. After the last job, the 21-year-old man will go to Australia to lay low and work as a fruit picker.

This however, was not meant to be as police got wind of his unlawful activity.

The man was waiting for a Kuala Lumpur-bound bus on Wednesday at 9pm when a team of policemen stormed the bus station in Dungun and apprehended him.

Dungun deputy police chief Superintendent Mohamad Zohan Seman said the suspect was wanted for breaking into a house in Jalan Nibong on Jan 5.

Police are also checking other cases he could be involved in at the district.

"The victim, a 56-year-old woman, noticed her house had been broken into after returning home about 1pm. She said someone entered her house by prying open the kitchen door. Her bedroom was in a total mess.

"Some of her jewelleries and a luxury watch, worth about RM15,000, were among the items missing." he said when met at a crime prevention workshop at UiTM Hotel, near here, today.

The 'smoking gun' in the case was that the suspect was caught wearing the victim's luxury watch.

After questioning, Mohamad Zohan said the suspect admitted he was on his way to Kuala Lumpur and was going to Australia to work as a fruit picker.

He said checks showed the suspect has several previous records for house break-in.

In an unrelated case, Mohamad Zohan said police arrested another burglary suspect on Jan 6, for breaking into a kindergarten in Sura Jeti, also in the district.

"We have arrested the 20-year-old man and are looking for his accomplice who is still at large.

"They broke into the kindergarten on Jan 5 and escaped with packets of rice, powdered milk and a computer." he added.
