Septuagenarian among 23 detained in drug raid

PARIT BUNTAR: A 70-year-old drug addict was arrested by police during a raid at an abandoned public market in Tanjung Piandang here yesterday (Jan 29).

Kerian district police chief Superintendent Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said the elderly man was among 23 people detained during Ops Sarang, which began at 7am and ended at 12.30pm.

He said the raid was jointly conducted by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and that the detainees were aged between 30 and 70.

"During the raid, police seized 25.7 grams of methamphetamine and 0.5 grams of heroin from four men, who will be investigated under Section 39A(1), Section 12(2)1 and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

"The other 19 individuals will be surrendered to AADK for further action," he said when contacted here today.

He said police will continue conducting operations to curb drug abuse in the district.
