Drug addicts suspected of cable theft arrested in routine crime prevention patrol

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Two suspected drug addicts including a 53-year-old on the police 'wanted persons list' since 2022, were arrested along the Ismail Sultan Highway, yesterday.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Rahmat Ariffin said the suspects, aged 37 and the 53-year-old, had an array of tools believed to be used in cable theft. They also tested positive for meth.

They were apprehended at 4am by the mobile patrol vehicle unit on routine crime prevention duties.

A Perodua Kenari was seized, while various tools including cable and bolt cutters, iron hammers and a metal cutting saw, pickaxes, iron bars, earth augers, and hoes, among others were confiscated.

Also found in the vehicle was a 69cm long parang.

Rahmat did not rule out the possibility that the suspects were behind a series of cable theft cases reported in the district.

It is believed they sold the cables to scrap metal operators, and used the ill-gained profits to feed their addictions.

He said the 53-year-old on has been on the 'wanted persons list' since 2022, in connection with drug-related offences.

Both suspects are currently in the police lockup to facilitate investigations under Section 29 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1955 and Section 15 (1) (a) of the Anti-Drug Act 1952.

He urged members of the public to contact police at their control operation centre at 07-5113622 or hotline at 07-5114486, if they suspected of any illegal activities conducted in their respective housing-estates.
