Arrested senior citizen released on police bail

KUALA LUMPUR: The senior citizen who was arrested for allegedly making insulting remarks against Prophet Muhammad on Facebook recently was released on police bail today.

This was confirmed by Bukit Aman Inspector-General of Police secretariat Corporate Communications head Datuk Asmawati Ahmad.

“The man was released on police bail at 11am today,” she said when contacted.

The 68-year-old man was remanded for three days from Wednesday, after he was picked up by police at his home in Mentakab, Temerloh, at 11.30am on Feb 19.

IGP Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun was reported as saying the sexagenarian was being held under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, on grounds of religion.

Fuzi said the case was also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities or network services).

A total of 395 police reports were filed against the Facebook account holder for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad and his wife Saidatina Aisyah.
