Dad in Penang claims trial to abusing sons

GEORGE TOWN: A father of two was charged with two counts of abusing his sons at the Sessions Court, here, today.

Mohamad Reza Abdul Hamid, 53, claimed trial to committing the offences at home in Taman Tun Sardon last December and January this year.

He was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both, upon conviction.

Judge Norsalha Hamzah allowed bail at RM15,000 with one surety for both charges and fixed April 15 for mention.

It was reported that the boys, aged 11 and 13, were brought to the police station by the state's Welfare Department officials five days ago.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang told newsmen yesterday, that on March 1, at about 6.30pm, the boys ran away from home while their father, who works as a driver, was at work.

They claimed that they ran away because their father had been abusing them physically by beating them on their head, face and whole body with his hands and feet, even for the slightest offence.

One of the boys had a bruised left eye, while the other had a fractured right rib.
