Senior cop charged again with soliciting RM1.5mil bribe

SHAH ALAM: A 36–year-old senior police officer, who claimed trial to four counts of accepting a total of RM1.35 million grafts as a favour to sweep a drug-related case under the carpet in 2017, was charged again at the Sessions Court today.

This time, the accused, Assistant Superintendent Gan Chee Liang, who is attached to the Bukit Aman headquarters, was charged with soliciting RM1.5 million as an inducement to solve a drug distribution case.

Gan, however, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read by a court interpreter before Judge Rozilah Saleh during the proceeding this morning.

He was accused under Section 16(a) (B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009, where as an officer of a public body of the Royal Malaysian Police, had solicited for himself a bribe of RM1.5 million from one Viktor Goh, 38.

The bribe was allegedly meant to settle Goh’s case in which he was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The offence was allegedly committed in a room at the Shah Alam Police Central Lock-Up at 11am on March 10, 2017.

Gan, if found guilty, may face imprisonment of up to 20 years, fine not more than five times of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher under Section 24 of the MACC Act.

MACC prosecuting officer Wan Ahmad Nidzam Wan Omar offered a bail of RM100,000 for the charge in two sureties.

However, Gan’s counsel Chong Kak Sen requested for the bail to be reduced to RM10,000 as his client was allowed bail of RM80,000 for four bribery charges at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday.

“Investigations into this case have been going on since 2017 and my client, who was arrested the same year, had never failed to report to the MACC office.

“I believe the bail amount, including the additional bail imposed by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court was sufficient,” he said.

Rozilah set bail of RM20,000 in two sureties and April 29 for mention.
