Bogus cop escapes with RM40,000 jewellery from goldsmith shop

KUANTAN: A bogus policeman walked into a goldsmith shop in Pekan yesterday and left with RM40,000 worth of jewellery.

Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Superintendent Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof, in a Bernama report today, said the 47-year-old shopowner told police that the suspect, in his 40s, went to her shop at 2.10pm.

"The man, who introduced himself as 'Din', told the victim's husband he wanted to buy some jewellery as gifts for the district police chief and an officer from Bukit Aman.

“The suspect claimed they were in conjunction with the National Day celebration and the district police chief’s promotion,

“After making the selection, the suspect took the items out of the shop on the pretext of showing it to another officer but left an envelope which he claimed to contain RM50,000 in cash,” he said.

Mohd Wazir said the bogus policeman had instructed the victim's husband not to open the envelope until he was told to do so.

When the suspect did not return to the shop, the victim decided to open the envelop only to find pieces of blank paper in it.

He said the suspect escaped with a set of sapphire jewels set in white gold, a pair of ruby, sapphire and emerald earrings, a bracelet made of sapphire and white gold, and four ruby, sapphire and diamond rings.

Mohd Wazir said the victim lodged a police report at the Pekan district police headquarters yesterday.

Investigations were being conducted under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
