Fortune-telling parrots failed to predict own confiscation

MIRI: A fortune-teller here, who uses two parrots to apparently predict a person’s future, has gained a lot of attention.

Following their owner’s instructions, the caged birds would pick a card for their customers which could allegedly “predict their future”.

In return, the birds would get a handful of bird food.

Pictures of the fortune teller and his birds who operate from a shopping mall here has since gone viral, prompting an investigation by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) on Sunday.

SFC Chief Executive Officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton said though the man claimed the parrots were his pets, he was unable to produce a permit to keep the protected birds.

Officers from the SFC seized the birds which had since been sent to the Piasau Nature Reserve.

Zolkipli urged the public to refrain from keeping such protected and endangered species and to contact the relevant authorities if they had any doubts.

He warned that those found guilty of keeping such protected species could be jailed or fined.

Those with information of similar activities are urged to call SFC hotlines at 016-8565564/019-8859996 (Kuching), 019-8224566/019- 8290994 (Miri), 019-8223449/019-8332737 (Bintulu), and 019-8190140/019-8894474 (Sibu).
