Police summon UM graduate to give statement on convo protest

KUAL LUMPUR: A Universiti Malaya (UM) civil engineering graduate has been called to the Brickfields police headquarters to give his statement on a protest which he carried out at his convocation ceremony.

The youth confirmed this via a text message to the New Straits Times.

He said that he was in the midst of giving his statement at the Petaling police station.

Earlier, Bukit Aman had sent a notice in its Whatsapp group about a press conference on the issue scheduled for 3pm today.

At his convocation ceremony on Monday, the youth had shouted “tolak rasis undur VC ini Tanah Malaysia” (reject racists, step down vice chancellor).

His protest call was a reference to the varsity’s vice- chancellor Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Hashim’s involvement at the recent Malay Dignity Congress which was co-organised by several varsities.

Since then groups, including alumni and staff union, have come out to condemn or support Wong.

Yesterday, UM lodged a police report over the solo protest carried out by the student because it wanted the police to investigate the case, as the graduating student’s action was unacceptable and had tarnished the university’s image.
