Selangor teacher charged with possession of LTTE-related items [NSTTV]

SEPANG: A secondary school teacher was charged at the Sessions Court here today with possessing items related to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The defendant, R. Sundram, 52, was charged with committing the offence at No 21, Jalan 6, Taman Telok, Telok Panglima Garang in Kuala Langat, Selangor on Oct 12 at about 2.30pm.

Sundram, who teaches Physics and English at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Telok Panglima Garang, is alleged to have committed an offence under Section 130JB (1)(a) of the Penal Code for possession of items related to terrorist groups or terrorist acts.

If found guilty, he could be jailed for not more than seven years, with a possible fine, and would also be liable to forfeiture of the illegal items.

However, no plea was recorded after the charge was read to him in Bahasa Melayu by the court interpreter.

The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Azlina Rasidi.

Sundram's lawyer, R Kirthiraj, applied for bail for his client on health grounds, as he suffers from diabetes.

However, the prosecution argued that no bail should be given because the offence is non-bailable under Section 13 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

The prosecution also applied for a mention date for an expert report, and to transfer the case to the High Court.

Judge Saifulakmal Mod Said fixed Dec 16 for mention, and no bail was allowed.

The court also instructed that Sundram should be given access to medical treatment for his diabetes.

Outside the court room, Kirthiraj said that Sundram will face another charge this Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, regarding postings on social media

He did not elaborate on what the posting are.

Sundram had arrived at court at about 8.10am and was heavily-guarded throughout the session.
