Single mother, 2 teens among 47 nabbed in anti-drugs op in Melaka

MELAKA: A 33-year-old single mother, and her school dropout teenage son and nephew, aged 16 and 14 respectively, were among 47 people arrested by the National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) on suspicion of drug abuse.

They were picked up by the agency in a raid at her house in Kampung Pantai Rombang, Tanjung Kling, here, at about 9pm yesterday.

Also arrested from the same house was a 15-year-old who is a friend of the woman’s son. The woman tested positive for drugs when a urine test was conducted on her.

Checks also showed that her son had admitted that he and his relative together with his friend had just taken syabu (methamphetamine) when the raiding party arrived at the house.

It was learnt that the woman’s son had languished into illegal substance abuse following the death of his father and peer pressure three years ago.

State Nada deputy director A. Reuben said a total of 51 people were tested during the operation at several locations in the state.

The 14-hour long drug bust ended at about midnight.

“The 47 people were arrested after they tested positive for several types of drugs including opiate and methamphetamine,” he said, adding that 50 officers from the agency were involved in the operation.

All the suspects, he said, were arrested under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
