Syrian man stabbed by hostel worker

GEORGE TOWN: A Syrian man was stabbed by a hostel worker at Lorong Prangin here early morning today.

The police were alerted of the incident at about 1.25am where 69-year-old man stabbed the 26-year-old Syrian with a vegetable knife.

The attacker sustained minor injuries and was treated at Penang Hospital’s outpatient department while the victim sustained injuries on his head and left leg apart from the stab wounds on his abdomen. He was warded at the same hospital.

The witness at the scene told the police that a commotion broke out between the two men nearby the toilet of the hostel before the older man stabbed the victim.

The witness also told that disagreement between them happens frequently as the victim, who has been renting there for the past five months, was returning to the hostel late.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong confirmed the incident and said the suspect has been detained for investigation.

“The 69-year-old has 15 criminal records and four drug related cases under him," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
