Cops investigating five-point star on Jalur Gemilang incident

KUALA LUMPUR: The president of the Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) has been called up by the police to explain an incident in which a wrongly designed Jalur Gemilang was put up at the 28th MABA Milo Lum Mun Chak Cup.

The incident took place at the Basketball Stadium along Jalan Hang Jebat, here, yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said MABA president Datuk Lua Choon Hann appeared at 8am this morning to provide an explanation on what happened.

"He informed that the incident was not caused by his side (MABA), instead it was a mistake committed by the information technology (IT) contractor.

"We have asked MABA to lodge a police report for further action," he said at a press conference at the Police Training Centre (PULAPOL), here, today.

Mazlan said police would also call the contractor involved to explain what happened.

"Police will also investigate if this incident had another agenda. The organiser has also issued an apology.

"Investigation will be carried out whether the incident was unintentional or otherwise. We advise event organisers to always conduct checks to ensure things like these don't happen," Mazlan said.

Earlier, in a statement on their Facebook page, MABA issued an apology over the incident.

"To all our fellow Malaysians and basketball friends, tonight was the opening ceremony of the 28th MABA Milo Lum Mun Chak Cup (2019). During the ceremony, our live broadcast team accidentally displayed the wrong Malaysia flag on our stadium TV screen. We apologise for this mistake, and we take full responsibility for such actions. Please forgive us, as we are always striving to grow and develop the sport of basketball in Malaysia," the statement read.

A picture of the flag has since gone viral on social media, with many expressing their anger and disappointment.

The flag that was displayed on the big screen showed the star having only five points to it.
