Zahid paid over RM70,000 insurance for 20 vehicles owned by his family

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi paid a total of RM72,209.57 for 39 vehicle insurance policies for 20 private-owned cars and motorcycles in 2015, the High Court heard today.

Of the 20 vehicles, 11 were luxury brand cars and the rest were high-powered motorcycles.

This was revealed by Allianz General Insurance branch manager Fang Suat Lim during Zahid’s trial involving 47 criminal breach of trust (CBT), corruption and money laundering charges involving millions of ringgit of charity foundation Yayasan Akalbudi funds.

Fang, 49, testified that the payment was for policies that were registered under Zahid’s name, that of his wife Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis and their children Nurulizwani, Datuk Nurulhidayah and Ahmad Shafiq Hazieq made via eight cheques throughout the year.

The policies, she said, were for luxury brand cars and high-powered motorcycles, among others, a BMW X5, a Mini Cooper S, an Audi Q7, a Toyota Land Cruiser and a BMW R1200 GS motorcycle.

She said the payments were made through Maya Consultant Services company and Allianz insurance agent Ahmad Izhan Abd Rashid via the cheques from Public Bank Bhd, Public Bank Islamic and Maybank Bhd.

“For the Chrysler Jeep Wrangler, Zahid bought two types of policies totalling RM4,925.15 and he also bought two types of policies for the Toyota Vellfire totalling RM6,368.55,” she said.

The amount of payment made by Zahid for the policies between Jan 2015 and Nov 2015 was RM65,070.04.

According to Fang, the value of the insurance policies and the amount reflected in the Allianz official receipt differed because there was a deduction of commission for payments made through Allianz insurance agents.

"Insurance agents would receive 10 per cent commission from the premium amount of insurance paid by customers," she said.

Fang also testified that the four types of policies Zahid took, namely the private car policy, motorcycle policy, enhanced road warrior policy and the bike warrior policy were valued between RM113.80 and RM8,552.52.

Trial continues before judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah on Monday.

On Oct 19 and Dec 14, 2018, as well as Feb 20 this year, Zahid pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court to a total of 47 charges, 12 of which are for CBT, eight for bribery and 27 for money laundering involving tens of millions of ringgit belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi.
