'Up to 70,000 vehicles to enter Terengganu during Raya'

KUALA TERENGGANU: The number of vehicles entering Terengganu is expected to increase to 50,000 to 70,000 during Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

State police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan said these vehicles would enter the state through its main roads and the East Coast Expressway 2.

Mazli said this was a significant increase from the usual 16,000 to 20,000 vehicles.

He said the increase involved cityfolk returning to their hometowns in Terengganu and Kelantan.

"To ensure that road users do not get trapped in traffic jams, we will mobilise traffic personnel to manage all routes in Terengganu.

"Some measures to be taken include setting up road diversions or placing traffic officers at traffic light junctions or areas with many intersections to ease congestion.

"Usually, areas like Setiu and Besut experience severe congestion as they are also routes for travellers heading for Kelantan," he said.

Mazli said 210 officers and traffic personnel, supported by nearby police stations, had been deployed to maintain smooth traffic flow, monitor congested roads and take necessary actions as required.

He reminded travellers to plan their journeys, adhere to authorities' instructions and keep abreast of the traffic conditions in the state.
