MCMC senior officer charged with graft

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) senior officer was charged with accepting RM87,000 graft involving the approval of universal service provision (USP) programme.

MCMC post and e-commerce division deputy director Mohd Iskandar King, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi.

The 42-year-old was charged with three counts of receiving bribes from two companies in three separate occasions since 2015.

On the first charge, the father of two was allegedly receiving RM50,000 from Golden Ventures Sdn Bhd director Mohd Azuzi Mohamed Kamil as an inducement for him in helping the latter to secure a USP contract.

He allegedly made the offence at IOI City Mall in Putrajaya on Jan 9 this year.

On the second and third charge, Iskandar allegedly received two cheques totalling RM18,500 each four years ago from the same person, who is acting as a consultant for OCK Setia Engineering, at the Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort on June 23, 2015.

The offence falls under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and Section 165 of the Penal Code.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Noor Hafizan Zakaria asked the court to impose RM20,000 bail in one surety.

However, counsel R. Sivahnanthan, who represented the accused, pleaded for minimum bail, stating that his client was a sole breadwinner.

The court then set RM20,000 bail in one surety and also ordered the accused to surrender his passport.

The court also fixed Jan 16 for hearing.
