Tanah Merah police aim to nab 8 addicts a day in latest crackdown

TANAH MERAH: District police, in an effort to show seriousness in combating the drug menace, are aiming to nab at least eight addicts a day.

Its police chief Deputy Superintendent Zainuddin Md Yusuf said since early this month, a total of 63 drug addicts have been arrested.

"In our series of anti-drug operations state-wide since early this year, we managed to nab 63 drug addicts.

"This addicts, all men and mostly locals, were picked up at several locations, in town areas as well as estates in Kemahang," he said at a press conference on the latest seizure of 4,000 WY pills (pil kuda or yaba pills) worth about RM40,000.

Zainudddin said all the 63 addicts have been released following the expiration of their remand orders.

"Police are waiting for the result from pathology department before taking the next course of action against them," he said.

Zainuddin said police were forced to take such drastic approach after investigations revealed that 80 per cent of the crimes in the district were related to drugs or caused by drug addicts.

On the latest seizure, he said it was following a raid held at Kampung Bukit Gading here on Jan 25.

"A police party from the district's Narcotic Criminal Investigation conducted checks on a Perodua Kancil at the area at 1.45pm.

"There were two men inside the car and upon checking it, the team found the pills," he said.
