Lorry driver jailed, fined for flouting MCO

TAWAU: The magistrate's court, here today, sentenced a lorry driver to three days jail and a RM1,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to disobeying police instructions during a movement control order (MCO) roadblock here.

Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus sentenced Iskandar Galigo, 32, after he pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 78 (2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Dzul ordered the accused to serve his jail term starting today. He also ordered Iskandar to serve another two months imprisonment, if he failed to pay his fine.

Based on the charge sheet, Iskandar is accused of committing the offence at KM50 of the Tawau-Kunak road at 8.35am, on March 28.

The accused was driving a Proton Persona when policemen ordered him to make a U-turn at the roadblock as he had violated the MCO.

However, the accused refused to adhere to the policemen and sped off towards Kunak.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohammed Ali Imran prosecuted, while Iskandar was unrepresented.
