11 in KL plead guilty to drunk driving

KUALA LUMPUR: 11 men were fined between RM2,500 and 3,500 each after they pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated.

In handing down the fines, magistrate Puteri Nursheila Rahimi advised all accused to be prudent drivers so no lives would be placed at risk on the road.

"If you are drunk, ask a friend to send you back home. You are not only putting yourselves in danger but also others," the magistrate said.

She ordered the 11 to serve between two to four months' jail if they failed to pay the fines.

The men had committed the offence at Jalan Dutamas, Jalan Kepong, Jalan Klang Lama, Jalan Hang Tuah and the Sprint Highway, here, between 1.24am and 11.05pm on June 3.

Their charge under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 provides for a fine of not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM6,000 or imprisonment not less than 12 months, if convicted.

According to the charge sheets, the 11 men were driving under the influence of alcohol, with their blood-alcohol level testing between 92mg and 184mg which was above the permitted limit of 80mg per 100ml of blood.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Abdullah Khazali prosecuted while all the accused were unrepresented.

It was earlier reported that 11 men were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in a police operation at Jalan Klang Lama, Hartamas, Kepong and Jalan Hang Tuah, last night.

About 150 vehicles were inspected during the operation which began at 9pm.
