Bangsar home invasion: 10 nabbed

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested 10 suspects allegedly involved in the robbery-cum-murder at a double-storey bungalow in Jalan Mambu, Bangsar here yesterday.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said all suspects, including the two main suspects, were arrested in a series of raids following the attack.

"Yes, we have arrested 10 individuals last night, including the main suspects," he said when contacted.

A press conference by Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin on the case and arrests is expected to be held today.

At about 3am yesterday, former Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) IT director Datuk Dr Wan Hassan Wan Embong, 71, died after sustaining slash wounds to his neck and body in the home invasion.

It is learnt the suspects proceeded to rob a second house belonging to a 34-year-old engineer at Taman Tiara Titiwangsa some two hours later, the same morning.

They used an almost similar modus operandi for the second break-in which took place at 5.15am.

However this time, the occupants of the house were tied with cable wires and threatened by the robbers who were each armed with a parang.

The victims also had their mouths stuffed with cloth.

It is believed there was at least another accomplice who was waiting with a getaway car nearby.

Anuar informed that initial investigations revealed there were at least three suspects involved in both incidents.

"There were some documents discarded (by the suspects) by the side of the road (at the second house), that leads us to believe the two cases were linked," he said.

It is learnt the police found a government pension card belonging to Wan Hassan near the second crime scene.

Anuar said police also collected fingerprints from both crime scenes.

"Investigations are ongoing under several Sections of the Penal Code, including for murder and burglary," he said, declining to furnish further details of the arrests.

The suspects will be remanded at the Duta Court today.

Wan Hassan and his wife, Saripah Yusof as well as their maid were at home when the robbers attacked.

Wan Hassan who was slashed on his neck and body, died at the scene while Saripah, 70, was admitted to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre after sustaining slash wounds to her shoulder.
