House fire in Kampar now classified as suicide

KAMPAR: Police have classified the case of a mother and two children who were killed in a fire today as suicide.

District police chief Superintendent Hasron Nazri Hashim said initial investigations revealed that the 35-year-old mother who worked as a nurse at the Kampar Hospital here suffered from depression due to family problems.

"Based on information shared by her best friend, the woman was always lamenting about her marriage and family problems.

"She was in a depressed state for the last two weeks. She told her friend that if she died one day, please arrange her funeral and don't let her family interfere," he said.

The 10am incident saw R. Kartiga and her two children, S. Harrshikka, 6 and S. Shaarhveesh, 12, killed after they suffered severe burns.

Their bodies were found on a bed in a rented room at Jalan Kampar Barat 3, Taman Kampar Putra here.

Hasron said a member of the public noticed the fire and alerted the police and firemen.

"While trying to control the fire, the firemen found the room was locked and they had to break the door. They found the three bodies on a bed located about 1.5 metres from the main door.

"Initial Investigations also revealed that the woman and her two children had been staying in the room for almost six years after being separated from her husband.

"We also found a petrol tank behind a closet and traces of petrol on the walls of the room," he added.
