Marine police seize fireworks worth RM80,000 in JB

JOHOR BARU: Marine police here seized 60 boxes of fireworks worth about RM80,000 during an operation on Saturday.

Marine Operation Force (MOF) Region 2 commander Assistant Commissioner Muhd Zailani Abdullah said the operation was conducted following a tip off.

"Following the tip off, a team conducting Ops Benteng Covid Landai rushed to the scene at Taman Skudai Indah 2, where they stopped and searched a lorry.

"Upon inspection, the team found 43 boxes of fireworks in the lorry. A 51-year-old suspect was also arrested," said Zailani in a statement.

He said the suspect then led the team to a nearby house where they found another 17 boxes of fireworks in the garage.

"The fireworks are valued at about RM80,000 and we believe they were being stored to be sold during the Chinese New Year festive season. We also seized a lorry worth RM80,000," said Zailani.

He said the case is being investigated under the Explosives Act 1959.

"We will continue to conduct operations to prevent criminal activities or anything against the law. Operations with an integrated approach with other departments will also be conducted periodically," said Zailani.

He also urged the public to continue to provide information to the police to prevent crime.
