Cops interview Charles Santiago, Steven Gan

KUALA LUMPUR: Klang member of parliament Charles Santiago has entered Bukit Aman to give his statement following two police reports lodged against him and Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan recently.

This is in light of their remarks on the Federal Court's decision that found Malaysiakini guilty of contempt and fined it RM500,000 on Feb 19.

Santiago was seen entering the police headquarters at 10am while Gan is schedule to do the same at 2pm today.

According to Kuala Muda police chief Adzli Abu Shah, a member of a non-governmental organisation lodged two separate police reports against Santiago and Gan in Gurun, Kedah.

"Investigation papers have been opened under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998.

On Feb 19, Malaysiakini was fined RM500,000 for contempt of court by the Federal Court in relation to comments left by readers on the news portal.

Contempt proceedings against the news portal and Gan were initiated by Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun over the comments.

Idrus argued that the two respondents had scandalised the court by facilitating five readers' comments on an article dated June 9 titled "CJ orders all courts to be fully operational from July 1."

The Federal Court ruled that Gan was not guilty of the same charge and that the 6-1 majority decision cannot be appealed but can be reviewed by the apex court.
