Maqis seizes 28 tonnes of imported boneless buffalo meat

PASIR GUDANG: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) foiled an attempt to smuggle in 28 tonnes of boneless frozen buffalo meat worth RM293,842 from India at the Johor Port here, yesterday.

Johor Maqis director Hizzuan Hasim said the seizure followed a regular inspection on imported goods about 5.40pm by department officers.

He said the inspection led officers to an incorrect 'seal' number on the container and in the goods transportation document or 'bill of lading' signed.

"Upon finding this discrepancy, the buffalo meat weighing 28,008 kilograms was confiscated for further action," he said.

He added that the meat is believed to be for local consumption.

"The act of importing any kind of agricultural product using false, inaccurate or inaccurate permits declaration, fake licenses, illegal certificates or other misleading documents is an offense under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011(Act 728).

"If convicted, those responsible can be fined not more than RM50,000 or imprisoned for a term not exceeding two years or both. Maqis has always been committed to law enforcement and will continue to do its bit to monitor all entrances to the country," he said.

He said this is to ensure that meat and vegetables imported are according to the food safety standards.
