Five-day remand for father who allegedly fed baby alcoholic drink

BALIK PULAU: Police have obtained a five-day remand order against a young father who allegedly fed his infant son liquor straight from the can.

The order was granted by Magistrate Khalijah Mohd Khalid when the 19-year-old was brought to the magistrate's court here this morning.

The man, clad in a black T-shirt and a pair of jeans, arrived at the court building here about 8.30am with his hands handcuffed.

Yesterday, police detained the man after a 30-second video allegedly showing him feeding liquor to a baby went viral.

Southwest police chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal said the man – the father of the child – was picked up in Telok Bahang about 1.30pm, shortly after a report was lodged against him.

Checks showed the suspect had a criminal record with 14 previous entries. He is also a person under police surveillance in Teluk Bahang.

The baby had been sent to the hospital for further checks although he appeared to be fine.

Southwest police chief Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal, when contacted today, said they had obtained a remand order against the man to assist probe under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"We are still investigating. I will update accordingly when our investigation completes," he said.

Earlier yesterday, Malaysian Anti-Cheap Liquor Movement (MACLM) president David Marshel lodged a police report at the Prai police station in connection with the 30-second video.
