Rela member remanded a week over Marang fatal shooting case

MARANG: A 56-year-old man, who allegedly shot two of his neighbours at Taman Raya Wakaf Tapai yesterday, will be placed under remand for seven days starting today.

Magistrate Engku Nurul Ain Engku Muda granted the remand order against the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) member to facilitate investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

The suspect, who wore orange lock-up clothes, arrived at the Marang court building at 10.35am.

Yesterday, the suspect allegedly fired a shotgun at a man and his nephew at the Rukun Tetangga hut in Taman Raya Wakaf Tapai around 2pm.

The victim, Fong Swee Fuan, 65, who was the Wakaf Tapai Rukun Tetangga sector deputy chairman and former Marang MCA division chief was injured in the chest and was confirmed dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, his nephew, Teo Hock Beng, 45, was seriously injured in the chest.

The suspect who fled in a four-wheel-drive vehicle was arrested at the farm area in Durian Mentangau, Dungun at about 4.20pm the same day.
